Flying High: A New Flag for Holy Family Home

By October 22, 2026No Comments

“We need a flag installed in the front garden of our recently refurbished Holy Family Home,” mused Sr. Veronica, our Begging Sister. “In the past, I have looked to the patriotic spirit and goodwill of the Knights of Columbus for help in cases like this.”

With a prayer to St. Joseph, she approached Pete. Sr. Veronica knew the Deputy Grand Knight, Mr. Peter Flecchia, from her annual appeals at his parish, St. Mary Magdalene in Media, PA. “Can you make this dream come true?” Sister asked as she and her Little Sister companion were collecting at the doors of his church.

A cautious “I’ll try” set Pete right to work. He began with the tedious task of shopping online for a supplier of flagpoles, flags, and installation services. He found the Brandywine Flag Company to be just what he was looking for—they would deliver the hardware and flag, complete the installation, and even mount a golden cross on top.

Once he received an estimate, Pete reached out to all the Knights of Columbus Councils in the vicinity. They generously pledged to contribute to the cost of this patriotic project.

Finally, on a Saturday morning, Mr. John Williams— arrived, surveyed the site, and placed a little flag in the ground to mark the exact spot indicated by Sr. Veronica. The secure installation was successfully accomplished a few days later.

Next, we needed willing Residents to serve as custodians. Joe and Brian smilingly agreed to be the flagmen, raising the flag with reverence and carefully taking it down whenever rain or snow begins to fall. Our new flagpole stands as a wonderful daily reminder to thank our Great God for our country—the land of the free and the home of the brave.
