Founded in 1839 by Saint Jeanne Jugan, the Little Sisters of the Poor are an international congregation of Roman Catholic women religious, serving the elderly poor in over 30 countries
The mission of the Little Sisters of the Poor is to offer the neediest elderly of every race and religion a home where they will be welcomed as Christ, cared for as family and accompanied with dignity until God calls them to himself.
The vision of the Little Sisters of the Poor is:
- to contribute to the Culture of Life by nurturing communities where each person is valued;
- to celebrate the wisdom of age;
- to share the compassionate love of Christ with all.
The values of the Little Sisters of the Poor include:
- REVERENCE for the sacredness of human life and for the uniqueness of each person, especially those who are poorest and/or weakest by providing care that is holistic and person-centered.
- FAMILY SPIRIT embracing all with joyful hospitality, open arms, hearts and minds.
- HUMBLE SERVICE by raising others up and appreciating simple, everyday tasks and experiences in accomplishing our work.
- COMPASSION for the weaknesses and sufferings of others and eagerness to relieve pain in all its forms and to make the elderly happy.
- STEWARDSHIP, with trust in God’s Providence and the generosity of others, we recognize that all gifts from God should be used responsibly in a spirit of gratitude and sharing.
Our Vows
Our religious consecration is composed of four vows — chastity, poverty, obedience and hospitality. By the first three we offer God our heart and affections, our personal talents and gifts, our possessions and our will – all that we are and have – for his glory and the salvation of souls.
Our fourth vow of hospitality gives a spiritual value to the many activities of our day and enables us to communicate God’s compassion and merciful love to the elderly
Admissions
Admission to our Homes is open to low-income elderly persons of at least 65 years of age, regardless of race, nationality or religion. Individuals, married couples and elderly priests are welcome to apply.
Some of our Homes have socially-oriented senior day programs through which we offer low-income seniors the possibility of participating in our pastoral and activity programs, enjoying a hot meal, engaging in volunteer service or simply socializing in a warm, friendly environment.
The admission process is Home-specific. If you are interested in learning more about a specific Home, or beginning the application process for yourself or a loved one, please contact the admissions coordinator in the Home where you intend to apply.
