Winter Fun at Holy Family Home
One of the nice features of our new building is the patio off of St. Joseph Care Unit. In warmer months especially, it makes it easy for Residents to enjoy time outside. Year-round, it brings the beauty of the outdoors right to the windows of our Living and Dining Rooms. Last Tuesday, for the first time in two years, we woke up to a winter wonderland!
Later in the morning, we made a new friend. As a greeting card puts it, “Snowmen are sent from Heaven unassembled.” Sr. Jessica saw this one waiting out in the yard and helped him roll onto the patio. Staff gathered at the window and got creative. Billy from the kitchen team and Joan from nursing ran to get parts: hand-drawn eyes on medicine cups, dish-detergent cap buttons, a carrot nose, a peppermint stick mouth, a candy pipe – everything he needed to look his best and impress the Residents when they came for lunch!
As the week went on, the temperatures remained ideal for snowmen. Not so much for people. But that didn’t stop the valiant kitchen team from following through with Thursday’s plans for a cook-out to bring a taste of summer to a frosty winter day. Eric and Nadir grilled everyone’s favorites: barbeque ribs, hamburgers and hotdogs to perfection as the snowman watched from a safe distance. The scent of the sizzling specialties mixed deliciously with the crisp cold air. Back inside the Residents applauded the meal and the staff who went all-out to bring both food and fun to the table.
