A new setting and a dear old tradition; new LSP Constitutions and a tried-and-true devotion; new devotees and an improved-with-age fervor – that’s what we saw at Holy Family Home on March 19, 2024.
The new setting was our little temporary chapel, site of Sacred Liturgy on the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The dear old tradition was to mark March 19 with expressions of gratitude to God for St. Joseph’s providential care of the Little Sisters of the Poor and their Elderly Residents since the beginning of the Congregation. Inviting a Bishop and priest-friends to celebrate Mass, followed by dinner and treats for the Elderly was always part of that tradition in all our Homes, all over the world. This year, here in Philly, Auxiliary Bishop John McIntyre and, our own Father James Sullivan were happy to respond to the traditional invitation.
“Our new Constitutions just renew and re-enforce our tried and true devotion to St. Joseph,” recount the Little Sisters. They rejoice to find the advice from the Book of Genesis, “Go to Joseph!” echoed in their recently updated Rule of Life:
Saint Jeanne Jugan must look upon our current Residents and staff as new devotees with “improved-with-age” fervor. As many as possible participated in Holy Mass in our little Chapel. Afterwards, Bishop McIntyre greeted each one and distributed gifts.
The Feast of St. Joseph this year was indeed in continuity with our venerable tradition. This is not an outdated devotion to St. Joseph. Many ongoing blessings quicken the flame of our love for our patron and protector. We have only to think of the safety of our construction workers, and the good results of the capital campaign for our building project, not to mention the innumerable benefits we receive each day as we pray: “St. Joseph, in this hour, show your power!”
