U of P Students Making a Bang with Bingo
On Friday evening, February 10, four University of Pennsylvania students visited Holy Family Home to volunteer with nine of our Residents trying their luck with the Home’s most popular game — BINGO. Delia, Madeeha, Ken and Sid are all members of the Penn Catholic Newman Community, the first Newman Center in the country. The Penn Newman Center was established in 1893.
The four students were joyfully welcomed by our Residents upon introductions. Sisters Jessica and Maria Catherine were also present to explain the Mission of the Little Sisters to the students. Somehow all of the Residents were winners! Dorothy and Mary Ellen won multiple games. Winners were rewarded with an assortment of Almond Joys, Peppermint Patties, Lifesavers and Root Beer Barrels. Apartment Resident, Paul Buzas, served as “M.C.,” helping to meet the special needs of the Bingo players and “calling the numbers” with his booming voice.
At the end of the evening, hugs were shared and our Residents were excited to hear their new friends would return the following Friday with some of their classmates. It was reminiscent of the final line in the movie Casablanca when Rick tells Captain Louis Renault, “Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
